You have probably invested in training for a number of your team. But I wonder if you feel that has been a wise investment?

Despite knowing it is a good way to build and develop skills, many organisations are reluctant to invest in training, as they see little in the way of results.

So, how can you make sure training is effective and you get good value?

  • Firstly, I always recommend creating a personal development plan for each member of staff – clearly mapping out what skills and additional learning will be helpful in supporting them
  • Talk to your employees and get their buy in to the training – a reluctant learner is rarely motivated to really learn
  • Do your homework on providing a good quality training provider – talk to companies you have shortlisted, and try to get recommendations
  • Ensure the training course is really providing the training that your employee needs – too many times I hear disappointment because training courses did not meet expectations
  • If possible try to work with a training provider who is able to tailor training to the needs of your team, rather than going for an off the shelf solution
  • Carry out post training evaluation – ask your employee to review their training course, what they enjoyed, what they learnt and how they will put into practice in their work. Equally, don’t forget to ask what didn’t go so well, and if they would recommend it to others.
  • Add in milestones for your team, following on from their training. This means cementing their learning, and giving them chance to put their new found skills into practice. There is nothing worse than training that languishes as hand outs in a drawer.
  • I also suggest a further follow up review – 6 months plus after the course. Can your team member still remember the training course, have they been able to use their training, what else would have been helpful, and indeed what else do they believe they need now?
