Every year there are awards for the UK’s top employers. These have grown over the years, but there is no doubt there is a definite prestige to being on that list.
Of course, as a business owner, whilst the kudos is nice, you will be questioning what is the benefit for your business. And the answer is that those businesses don’t have any problem attracting high calibre staff.
I am not going to suggest you starting entering awards – that’s entirely your choice, but there are ways you can build your reputation as the “go to” employer.
Above all it is around consistency. Ensuring everybody is treated fairly and equally, whilst remembering everyone is an individual.
How you achieve consistency is around having a robust set of procedures and systems in place – well documented and supported with good training.
Give your people a chance to share their ideas, and then act on them. Give your team opportunities to develop and grow their skills – moving them into different areas of the business, and mapping out their career progression.
Offer them flexible working opportunities where possible.
Remember to thank them for good performance.
Of course, the usual things about attracting staff still apply like good salaries and benefits packages, but that won’t make you the employer of choice.
