Companies often approach us when they have been struggling to fill a vacancy, to see if we can help.
Whilst we are definitely not a recruitment agency, over time we have developed a range of strategies to help our clients make successful appointments time and time again.
We will talk about that another time, but today we are going to look at one of the reasons it goes wrong…
Often businesses forget that the job advertisement – whether online, on paper or through an agency, is just that: an advert.
If you think about advertisements in the broader sense, you recognise that by and large, their purpose is to sell something.
So why then, when it comes to recruiting, does selling go out of the window?
It is just as vital (actually I would argue more vital), to sell your business at this point, as when selling your goods and services to a customer.
Take a look at your last recruitment campaign. Does the vacancy sound fun and interesting? Does what you have to offer sound tempting? Have you indicated that the company is more than 9 to 5 drudgery?
I am sure your business is a great place to work. You probably offer opportunities and small benefits you had forgotten about, aside from the more traditional pension scheme, private medical or generous holiday allowance.
What do I mean?
Do you offer free tea and coffee? Do you have a flexible working policy – allowing different start and finish times? Do you support staff who want to be school governors, or volunteers, with 2-3 days paid absence per year?
You get the idea…
And if you say the team has a sense of humour, or you are looking for somebody with a good sense of humour, does that come across? Do you show a slightly lighter side?
Don’t get me wrong – recruiting is serious business. But making sure you reflect your business in the possible light is just as serious.
