We are often asked to help clients manage individuals who display unacceptable behaviour, but the key to managing this effectively is recognising the signs that there is a problem early on.
Of course, the list could be endless, and there is an element of subjectivity here, but try checking off these problem behaviour signs:
- Persistent lateness – and an apparent disregard to rectify timekeeping
- Over reaction – shouting or losing temper and reacting negatively to minor issues
- Sulking – the silent treatment, brooding and showing no desire to engage with fellow workers
- Deliberately flouting rules – disregarding company regulations almost in an attempt to be reprimanded or disciplined
- Belittling other members of staff – particularly in front of others
- Claiming credit for everything – refusing to acknowledge the part played by others, or taking praise for other employees’ work
- Being over critical – this is just as true of themselves as others, with a constant need for praise or reassurance
- Breaking confidentiality – repeating information told to them in confidence to undermine others, or make themselves seem overly important
- Gossiping and talking about others – often in an attempt to create negativity towards an individual
- Significant changes in behaviour – if an employee suddenly starts behaving in a very different way to what you have come to expect
Understanding and tackling behaviour problems in the workplace can be very tricky, so I will come back to this subject to give you some tips at a later date.
